My Philosophy of Education
My educational philosophy is based upon the belief that it is my responsibility to ensure that students receive the best possible learning experiences through a combination of my teaching methods, the use of the resources that are available to them, and ensuring that the environment in which they are placed is conducive to learning. I am an advocate for hands-on learning, critical thinking, and the belief that students need to develop skills that they will not only use throughout their entire education experience, but more importantly, skills that they will use throughout the rest of their lives.
Teachers Should Know Their Students
A large part of being a successful teacher is ensuring that ALL students are given opportunities for learning, regardless of their learning style. It is the responsibility of the teacher to get to know each one of her students and their learning styles and to adjust her teaching methods accordingly. Differentiated instruction caters to the diverse learning needs of all students and should be a part of every educator's teaching philosophy.
Communication is Key
Parental involvement is absolutely necessary in order for students to get the most from their classroom experiences. By communicating with parents the different subjects that their child is learning on any given week builds students' knowledge base with regard to connecting their studies to the outside world. Offering parents weekly suggestions for different books, educational films, activities or even simple discussion can have a dramatic effect on how well students retain information. It is because of this belief that I will implement a class newsletter filled with current events and suggestions for parents to help integrate their classroom with their home.
In addition to communicating with parents, I also firmly believe in communication within the school. Teacher support is crucial, not only for the success of the teacher, but more importantly for the success of the students. Collaboration ensures a strong school foundation from which students can grow. Two heads are better than one, and I absolutely believe that no truer words can be spoken in the education field.
Student Safety
Students need to be able to feel safe, comfortable and free from ridicule in order to get the most from their education. Creating a close-knit classroom community allows for this to take place. It is my intention to create an environment where students feel safe testing theories and where they feel comfortable making mistakes, which are excellent opportunities for learning. In order to create this close-knit community, students will take ownership of their classroom by creating classroom rules, creating the punishments for rule infractions, and will be exposed to various exercises dealing with the theme of respect. Community and respect will play a large role of my classroom's climate.
This is the basic foundation of my educational philosophy. To get a more in-depth look at my complete philosophy, feel free to download my Personal Educational Philosophy paper by clicking here.
